ART STUDIO
Our journey of learning is ongoing and involves readings, conferences,
workshops and collaborative discussions and presentations. While
studying at the Reggio Emilia Inspired Institute in St. Louis, Mo. in
2002, members of our staff speculated the possibility of opening our own
Atelier or Art Studio. That one "wonder" led us to a year long, intensive
study of the possibilities for us; the staff and families of our school and
community, and the children to have our own Art Studio.
In 2003, My School established an Art Studio, centrally located in the
heart of the school. Classes visit the studio on a regular basis with
scheduled studies of art techniques and materials including, but not
limited to, line, warm/cool colors, color mixing, sculpturing, tempera,
watercolor, wet chalk, pastels, sketching still life's, foil painting, wire and
clay/dough. We believe that this exposure and practice of working with a
wide variety of materials affords children endless techniques to use in
communicating their ideas and thoughts.
This environment acts as a "third teacher" by offering this wealth of
materials and equipment children investigate and explore; by providing
and displaying works of art by local artists; by showing and celebrating
children's works of art; and by documenting the process children engage
in while in the art studio. Multi-cultural tunes can be heard playing
attuning children's ears to collections of music, instruments and works
from various countries.
Literature related materials are shared with children exposing them to
famous artists and their works. Prints, sculptures and clay works are
displayed to reinforce a particular artist's work or "type of work" we may
be studying.
The "atelieristi" or art studio teacher consults and works with
classroom teachers discussing projects work and the connections that
can be made between studio work and classroom work on a regular
basis. Art studio visits compliment the work that is being explored in
each classroom's mini- atelier or art area.
Children's work and their process are displayed daily on shelves, bulletin
areas and in "daily journaling" A collection of children's compositions are
saved both in the Art Studio and classroom and artistically displayed
during the annual Art Show in the Spring.
We invite parents, friends, and relatives to share their interests and talents
with us.
